League points calculator: what total are you on pace for?

Add a team’s wins, draws and defeats and the number of league games in the season. You get the points per game, the projected final total and how many points per game are needed from here to reach a target.

The benchmarks people actually use

Fans and pundits talk in round numbers. In a 38-game league, 40 points has traditionally been enough to avoid the bottom three, but in recent seasons the safe line has often been closer to 36 to 38. Around 70 usually gets a club into the European places, and 80-plus is a strong title challenge. Use the target box to try each of those against any team’s record.

Why a projection is rough

Points per game early in a season is a noisy number. Ten matches is about a quarter of the season, and a run of three wins in a row changes the pace by a lot. The remaining fixtures also matter: a team that has played most of the top clubs already will have an easier run, and vice versa. Treat the projection as the pace so far, not a forecast. For a forecast that accounts for opposition and the underlying chances, look at expected points on the xPts guide.

Other seasons and leagues

Change the games box for any league: 34 for the Bundesliga and Ligue 1, 38 for the Premier League, LaLiga and Serie A. Three points for a win and one for a draw apply almost everywhere.

Questions

How many points do you need to avoid relegation?

There is no fixed number. 40 is the traditional benchmark in a 38-game league, but the real line moves every season; in many seasons 36 to 38 has been enough.

How many points do you need to win the league?

Usually 80 to 90 in a 38-game league, and more when two clubs are very strong. It depends on how well the second-best team does.

Does it handle deducted points?

Subtract the deduction from the target. For example, a 3-point deduction means entering a target that is 3 points higher.
